Field Marshal Serapio Cruz, is believed to be born in Sanguayabá , Guatemala Palencia CA at a date yet not determined, little is known about the life of this valiant soldier, regarded as the precursor of the revolution of 1871 in Guatemala.

His grandfather, Don Tomas and Santa Cruz his father Timothy Santa Cruz, were livestock dealers, and lenders business in Jalapa, near Palencia and Guatemala City. The country's situation was precarious and the colonial system had changed little since independence in 1821, there was much inequality in the population and lack of opportunities, and the General Serapio Cruz revealed a February 2, 1867, being defeated and then exhilia in El Salvador. In 1869 he returned from Mexico, attacking Nentón Square in Huehuetenango, joining Justo Rufino Barrios and Vicente Mendez Cruz, who are constantly being pursued by government troops of Marshal Vicente Cerna.

The General Serapio Cruz, it looked as superior, and at that time who were high ranking were called "Tata" by subordinates, and Lapo is the diminutive people used to call Serapio. By January 1870, the revolutionary forces approaching the capital, to a site miles from the town of Palencia, is in this town where government forces attacked the revolutionists, capturing the Mariscal Serapio Cruz, mutilated his body, hanging his head in La Ceiba in the square, then move it to the capital, showing it as a war trophy, this one January 23, 1870.

His remains rest in the crypt of the Metropolitan Cathedral in Guatemala City.
